Dr. Trushar R. Patel is the Tier II Canada Research Chair in RNA & Protein Biophysics. Dr. Patel’s research focus is to understand how viral RNAs recognize host proteins, with the long-term goal of advancing treatment options for viral infections. The Flavivirus group of viruses is composed of pathogenic viruses which have few effective treatment options. These include dengue, yellow fever, encephalitis, Zika and West Nile virus. Recent outbreaks of these diseases have led to numerous deaths worldwide and put enormous strain on healthcare systems. As Dr. Patel identifies, “at this stage my research is restricted to academic community only”, the goal of the research will be to eventually contribute to targeting the host proteins in a fashion which will lead to treatments for these dangerous viruses.
